NHSRCL Constructs Three River Bridges in Last One Month for Mumbai Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor

Published Date

MAHSR corridor has made a significant progress as three river bridges have been completed in last one month in the state of Gujarat.

The first river bridge was completed on Purna river, Navsari district.

Salient features of bridge:

  • Length of the bridge is 360 meters
  • Consists of 09 (nine) Full Span Girders (40m each)
  • Height of Piers – 10 m to 20 m
  • Circular Piers of 4 m & 5 m diameter
  • The bridge is in between Bilimora and Surat HSR station
  • Continuous monitoring of high and low tides from Arabian Sea was done during the construction.
  • Foundation work was challenging as water level in the river was rising 5-6 m (fortnightly) during high tides

The second river bridge was completed on Mindhola river in Navsari district.

Salient features of bridge:

  • Length of the bridge is 240 meters
  • Consists of 06 (Six) Full Span Girders (40 meters each)
  • Height of Piers- 10 m to 15 m
  • Circular Piers of 4 meter diameter
  • This bridge is between Bilimora and Surat HSR station
  • Continuous monitoring of high and low tides from Arabian Sea was done during the construction.

The third river bridge was completed on Ambika river, Navsari district.

Salient features of bridge:

  • Length of the bridge is 200 meters
  • Consists of 05 (Five) Full Span Girders (40 meters each)
  • Height of Piers- 12.6 m to 23.4 m
  • Circular Piers of 4 m, 5 m & 5.5 m diameter
  • This bridge is between Bilimora and Surat HSR station
  • Major challenges involved in the construction process:
    • Steep slope of the river bank
    • Underground rocky strata during piling
    • Maximum pier height including pier cap was around 26 m (equal to 10 storey building), to work at this height was very challenging inside the river

Till date, four river bridges have been completed for MAHSR corridor in last six months.

There are total 24 river bridges on MAHSR corridor (Gujarat and Maharashtra) out of which 20 are in Gujarat and 04 are in Maharashtra.

The longest river bridge of 1.2 km is being constructed on Narmada river, Gujarat and 2.28 km long bridge will be constructed on Vaitarna river in Maharashtra.

MAHSR Project Status

  • Pile: 305.9 km
  • Foundation: 251.2 km
  • Pier: 208.9 km
  • Viaduct: 69.3 km
  • HSR Stations in Gujarat: The work on 8 HSR stations: Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad and Sabarmati are under various stages of construction.

Quote from Shri Rajendra Prasad, Managing Director, NHSRCL -Construction of bridges over the rivers are very challenging and meticulous planning is required. During the construction of bridges over Mindhola and Purna rivers, the tides from the Arabian sea were closely monitored. Our engineers worked on a height of 26 m for the construction of bridge over Ambika river.
